June 21st is one of two solstices - days when the rays of the sun directly strike one of the two tropical latitude lines. In 2009, the solstice occurs and summer begins in the Northern Hemisphere on June 21, at 1:45 a.m. This year is of special importance, since the solstice happens to land on the same day as Father's Day! This special day officially marks the beginning of the summer season, as well as a day to honor our fathers.

According to traditional Ayurveda, summer is a time when the element of fire (tejas) is increased, which in turn increases pitta and can cause vata to accumulate. During this time of year, it is common to see skin dryness and irritation as well as various issues associated with excessive pitta.
